The Great Wave, is a woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hokusai. An example of ukiyo-e art, it was published sometime between 1830 and 1833 as the first in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and is his most famous work. This particular woodblock is one of the most recognized works of Japanese art in the world. It depicts an enormous wave threatening boats near the Japanese prefecture of Kanagawa. While sometimes assumed to be a tsunami, the wave is, as the picture's title notes, more likely to be a large okinami – literally "wave of the open sea." Mount Fuji can be seen in the center background and is dwarfed by the huge wave.
Copies of the print are in many Western collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the British Museum in London, The Art Institute of Chicago, and in Claude Monet's house in Giverny, France.

Van Gogh, "Almond Blossom" (2hr)
2-Hour Class
Van Gogh created this lovely painting of almond blossoms to celebrate the birth of his nephew and namesake, son of his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo.
On January 31, 1890, Theo wrote to Vincent of the birth of his son, whom he had named Vincent Willem. Van Gogh, who was extremely close to his younger brother, immediately set about making him a painting of his favorite subject: blossoming branches against a blue sky. The gift was meant to hang over the couple’s bed. As a symbol of this new life, Vincent chose an almond tree, which blooms early in southern regions, announcing the coming spring as early as February.
Vincent Willem van Gogh: (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty, and bold color, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. After years of painful anxiety and frequent bouts of mental illness, he died at the age of 37 from a gunshot wound, generally accepted to be self-inflicted (although no gun was ever found). His work was then known to only a handful of people and appreciated by fewer still.

Vincent Van Gogh, "Wheat Field with Cypresses" (2.5hr)
In the Spring 1889, when Van Gogh was well enough to venture into the countryside, he found the inspiration for this magnificent painting.
Throughout that early summer, he created a series of famously powerful landscapes, each bursting with a violent energy that many have attributed to his madness. However, for all the potential signs of a tormented mind that such works display, they were all painted during periods of remission. The swirling, heavily stylized forms, now instantly associated with Van Gogh, did not suddenly appear from nowhere - they mark a progressive development in his work rather than a radical break.
Writing to his brother, Theo, from the asylum in Saint-Rémy on July 2, 1889, Van Gogh described his latest addition to the series he had launched that June: "I have a canvas of cypresses with a few ears of wheat, poppies, a blue sky, which is like a multicolored Scotch plaid [and] impasted like Monticellis." Van Gogh regarded this sun-drenched landscape as one of his "best" summer canvases and repeated the composition three times.
In the history of art, cypresses are traditionally a motif signifying death. Dark and somber, they normally belong in the cemetery. Despite a certain sinister air, which some have linked to Van Gogh's suicidal tendencies, the trees here are alive and vibrant. In fact the whole scene is vigorously animated, with each part shading into others. Nothing is stable; everything that is solid melts into air.
This painting is part of the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, here in NYC.
"San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk" is an oil painting by Claude Monet that was painted in 1908.
The painting received substantial public attention as the focus of John McTiernan's 1999 remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, aheist film where the painting (identified as being worth $100 million) is stolen by a billionaire, played by Pierce Brosnan. San Giorgio Maggiore is an island off of the coast of Venice, Italy. This painting is sometimes known as Dusk in Venice, or Sunset in Venice.

About Henri Matisse: Matisse is considered the most important French artist of the 20th century and, along with Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential modernist painters of the last century.
A student of the masters of Post-Impressionism, Matisse later made a reputation for himself as the leader of a group of painters known as Les Fauves. An ironic label given to them by a critic (it means "wild beasts"), the name reflected Matisse's aggressive strokes and bold use of primary colors.

You get to choose your own color combination! This class is great for couples or roommates because you each get to make a different painting and they hang beautifully together. The picture to the left shows four different color variations that Warhol did.
Andy Warhol began as a commercial illustrator in New York, doing artwork for ads and magazines in the 1940s and 1950s. Eventually he crossed from commercial work to fine art, blurring the line between the two along the way. In the early 1960s his huge and colorful silk-screen renderings of banal objects like Coke bottles and a Campbell's Soup can were hugely popular & established him as the leader of the Pop Art movement.
This painting is a monochromatic study of reds and oranges. In this lesson we learn how to blend between the different shades to create soft transitions from the lighter tones of bright orange to the deep shades of reds and maroons.
About Georgia O'Keeffe: Born November 15, 1887 near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, O'Keeffe first came to the attention of the New York art community in 1916, several decades before women had gained access to art training in America’s colleges and universities, and before any of its women artists were well known or highly celebrated. Within a decade, she had distinguished herself as one of America's most important modern artists, a position she maintained throughout her life. As a result, O’Keeffe not only carved out a significant place for women painters in an area of the American art community that had been exclusive to and is still dominated by men, but also she had become one of America’s most celebrated cultural icons well before her death at age 98 in 1986.

About "The Kiss" by Gustav Klimt: Klimt depicts the couple locked in intimacy, while the rest of the painting dissolves into shimmering, extravagant flat patterning. The patterning has clear ties to Art Nouveau and the organic forms of the Arts and Crafts movement. At the same time the background evokes the conflict between two- and three-dimensionality intrinsic to the work of Degas and other modernists. The man's head ends very close to the top of the canvas, a departure from traditional Western canons that reflects the influence of Japanese prints, as does the very simplified composition.

2.5-hour Class
One of Monet's famous images of a bridge over a pond of water lilies.
In 1893, Monet, a passionate horticulturist, purchased land with a pond near his property in Giverny, intending to build something "for the pleasure of the eye and also for motifs to paint." The result was his water-lily garden. In 1899, he began a series of eighteen views of the wooden footbridge over the pond, completing twelve paintings, including the present one, that summer. The vertical format of the picture, unusual in this series, gives prominence to the water lilies and their reflections on the pond.

"The Starry Night": (Dutch: De sterrennacht) is a painting by Dutch post-impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. The painting depicts the view outside his sanitarium room window at night, although it was painted from memory during the day. Since 1941 it has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The painting is widely hailed as his magnum opus.
"This morning I saw the country from my window a long time before sunrise," the artist wrote to his brother Theo, "with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big." Rooted in imagination and memory, The Starry Night embodies an inner, subjective expression of van Gogh's response to nature. In thick sweeping brushstrokes, a flamelike cypress unites the churning sky and the quiet village below. The village was partly invented, and the church spire evokes van Gogh's native land, the Netherlands.

A pretty view of New York City from Brooklyn.
in this painting we focus on how layers are used to create depth and dimension.
First we have our sky and skyline. Followed by the bridge and river. finished off by the top of a brownstone building and some fall foliage. With each layer the colors get brighter and the layers have more detail. This helps to create the sense of atmosphere between each element.
This is a great example of Picasso's use of bold expressive lines to create drama and a dynamic composition.
About Pablo Picasso's "The Kiss": The Kiss was painted a day before Picasso’s 88th birthday at his home at Mougins along the Côte d'Azur, where he lived the last fifteen years of his life. In May 2008, The Kiss was sold for $17.4 million, the highest price ever paid for a post-1960 Picasso painting.
Take a vacation from the city and join us for a tour of the wide open skies of the southwest!
In this painting we learn how to create a beautiful gradient of deep to light blues, then to bright yellow and finally a fiery red. A range of mountains in the background provide depth, while a large silhouette of a cactus holds our attention in the foreground. The simple but effective use of transparent layers and flat black shapes create a very convincing desert landscape.

Georgia O'Keeffe, "Brooklyn Bridge" (2hr)
2-hour Class
Embraced as a symbol of modern, urban life and technological progress, the Brooklyn Bridge became a popular subject for artists and writers from the moment of its completion in 1883. Georgia O'Keeffe's forceful interpretation of the bridge, one of the last works that she painted in New York before her permanent relocation to New Mexico in 1949, is considered her farewell to the city where she had lived and worked for many years. O'Keeffe's particular modernist vision emphasized essential aspects of form, resulting in a pared-down but intensified vision of her subjects. Her focus here was the Gothic-style arches of the massive bridge tower, and the arcing lines of the supporting cables, that proclaim this vast utilitarian structure a kind of American cathedral.
Pablo Picasso, ''The Dream'' (2.5hr)
2.5-hour Class
The Dream or Le Rêve in French, is a 1932 oil painting by Pablo Picasso, then 50 years old, portraying his 22-year-old mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter. It is said to have been painted in one afternoon, on 24 January 1932. It belongs to Picasso's period of distorted depictions, with its oversimplified outlines and contrasted colors resembling early Fauvism.
Another classic painting by the Dutch post-Impressionist master, Vincent van Gogh. This and "The Starry Night" are his two most famous night scenes.
After finishing Café Terrace at Night, Van Gogh wrote a letter to his sister expressing his enthusiasm:“I was only interrupted by my work on a new painting representing the exterior of a night café. On the terrace there are small figures of people drinking. An immense yellow lantern illuminates the terrace, the facade, the side walk and even casts light on the paving stones of the road which take a pinkish violet tone. The gables of the houses, like a fading road below a blue sky studded with stars, are dark blue or violet with a green tree. Here you have a night painting without black, with nothing but beautiful blue and violet and green and in this surrounding the illuminated area colours itself sulfur pale yellow and citron green. It amuses me enormously to paint the night right on the spot. Normally, one draws and paints the painting during the daytime after the sketch. But I like to paint the thing immediately. It is true that in the darkness I can take a blue for a green, a blue lilac for a pink lilac, since it is hard to distinguish the quality of the tone. But it is the only way to get away from our conventional night with poor pale whitish light, while even a simple candle already provides us with the richest of yellows and oranges."

This painting has three distinct features. The blue sky with fluffy clouds in the silhouette of a dove. The dark and somewhat ominous sky in the background. Finally we have the ocean in the foreground.
For each section we will go over different techniques. In the two skies we'll learn blending and how to get a nice crisp edge. For the ocean we will focus on how to paint the effects of light reflecting off the water as well as creating a realistic wave.
About René Magritte: (21 November 1898 – 15 August 1967) was a Belgian surrealist artist. He became well known for a number of witty and thought-provoking images. His work challenges observers' preconditioned perceptions of reality.
This is a fun tribute to everyone's favorite painting show "The Joy of Painting" with Bob Ross.
About Bob Ross: Ross enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at age 18 and was living in Florida early in his military career when the Air Force transferred him to Eielson AFB (in Alaska). This is where he first saw the snow and mountains that later became recurring themes in his artwork. He developed his quick-painting technique in order to be able to create art for sale in brief daily work breaks. Having held military positions that required him to be, in his own words, "mean" and "tough," "the guy who makes you scrub the latrine, the guy who makes you make your bed, the guy who screams at you for being late to work," Ross decided that if he ever moved on from the military, "it wasn't going to be that way any more," "vowing never to scream again." Ross discovered after beginning his sideline in painting that he was soon able to earn more from selling his work than from his Air Force position. After leaving the Air Force, he studied with Bill Alexander, a famous TV instructor as well, before becoming famous worldwide with his own television program, The Joy of Painting.

This work of art is sometimes referred to as "The Dancer," and is part of a larger work of art called the Stoclet Frieze. The work was made from 1905 to 1911 and comprised of a series of three mosaics commission for the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. The panels depict a swirling Tree of life, a standing female figure and an embracing couple. These three pieces were some of his finest decorative work, and as he publicly stated, "probably the ultimate stage of my development of ornament."

René Magritte, The Son of Man (2.5hr)
2.5-hour Class
The Son of Man (French: Le fils de l'homme) is a 1964 painting by the Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte.
Magritte painted it as a self-portrait. The painting consists of a man in an overcoat and a bowler hat standing in front of a short wall, beyond which is the sea and a cloudy sky.
The Son of Man is a prominent motif in the 1999 art heist remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. In this film, a copy of the painting is prominently displayed in the home of the protagonist. The love interest takes note of it as "the stereotypical faceless businessman". The protagonist of the film uses numerous accomplices, all dressed like the subject of the painting, to confuse the police while he enters the museum to apparently return the painting he stole earlier in the film. The bowler-hatted men all carry identical briefcases full of copies of The Son of Man.

Claude Monet, "Water Lilies & Japanese Bridge" (2.5hr)
2.5-hour Class
One of Monet's famous images of a bridge over a pond of water lilies.
In 1893, Monet, a passionate horticulturist, purchased land with a pond near his property in Giverny, intending to build something "for the pleasure of the eye and also for motifs to paint." The result was his water-lily garden. In 1899, he began a series of eighteen views of the wooden footbridge over the pond, completing twelve paintings, including the present one, that summer. The vertical format of the picture, unusual in this series, gives prominence to the water lilies and their reflections on the pond.
This painting looks more complicated than it is. The instructor will guide you through all the details that make this painting so fun and exciting.

Picasso, ''Girl before a Mirror'' (3hr)
3-Hour Class
One of Picasso's most famous and vibrant paintings. You have the option to change the colors around to create your own version of this masterpiece.
From MoMA's website, Curator Emeritus, John Elderfield: Of all the women that Picasso painted, I think that the images of Marie-Thérèse Walter are the most extraordinary. She was very young when Picasso met her in the late 1920s—in fact a teenager. And they began a secret love affair, which produced in 1932 an amazing sequence of paintings.
It is a curious painting, visually so splendid that we might forget the way in which the anatomy is broken apart and separated. The woman seen on the left could be pregnant. At least there is the implication of fecundity, of someone who is very beautiful, very vital, very sexual. In the mirror a different image appears; the figure seems sorrowful, expressionistic and even distorted compared to the clarity on the left.
The woman on the left is given two faces. The profile view is very youthful, the full face slightly carnival-like, with bright yellow and the red of the cheek. One can produce a lot of narratives, which are all quite plausible, and maybe contradict each other. Great modern pictures combine patterns of signification that keep us entranced in them; and its no surprise that this is one of the most popular pictures in the Museum.

Bridge View (3hr)

3-hour Class
A pretty view of New York City from Brooklyn.
in this painting we focus on how layers are used to create depth and dimension.
First we have our sky and skyline. Followed by the bridge and river. finished off by the top of a brownstone building and some fall foliage. With each layer the colors get brighter and the layers have more detail. This helps to create the sense of atmosphere between each element.

Come join us for this warm and dramatic painting by Leonid Afremov. In this class we will learn how to use warm and cool colors to create mood, drama and bold lighting effects.

2.5-hour Class

This painting looks more complicated than it is. The instructor will guide you through all the details that make this painting so fun and exciting.

One of Salvador Dalí's most recognizable works. The painting has been in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City since 1934. It is widely recognized and frequently referenced in popular culture.
The well-known surrealist piece introduced the image of the soft melting pocket watch. It epitomizes Dalí's theory of "softness" and "hardness", which was central to his thinking at the time. As Dawn Ades wrote, "The soft watches are an unconscious symbol of the relativity of space and time, a Surrealist meditation on the collapse of our notions of a fixed cosmic order". This interpretation suggests that Dalí was incorporating an understanding of the world introduced by Albert Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity. Asked by Ilya Prigogine whether this was in fact the case, Dali replied that the soft watches were not inspired by the theory of relativity, but by the surrealist perception of a Camembert cheese melting in the sun.
Also, a new option for this painting is to split the image between two canvases. This is perfect for couples or roommates. If this intrests you, please let us know in the "comments" section on the checkout page so we can have it set up when you arrive. Thanks!

A whimsical spirited painting with lots of room for creative interpretation.
About "The Tree of Life" by Gustav Klimt: The Tree of Life is an important symbol in nearly every culture. With its branches reaching into the sky, and roots deep in the earth, it dwells in three worlds- a link between heaven, the earth, and the underworld, uniting above and below.
"San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk" is an oil painting by Claude Monet that was painted in 1908.

This painting looks more complicated than it is. The instructor will guide you through all the details that make this painting so fun and exciting.

3-hour Class
An exciting, colorful and almost abstract scene of Times Square at night.
In this painting we learn how to express the dynamic play of light that makes Times Square so electrifying.
This painting is a monochromatic study of reds and oranges. In this lesson we learn how to blend between the different shades to create soft transitions from the lighter tones of bright orange to the deep shades of reds and maroons.
